2014-15 Baseball Captains
The Panthers will be led by four captains this upcoming 2014-15 academic year.
Garden City, NY  - Head Coach Dom Scala has named four student-athletes that will serve as captains for the Adelphi University baseball team during the upcoming 2015 season.

Scala has chosen a trio of seniors in position players Nick Zito and Donato Signore and pitcher Ricky Van Allen along with junior pitcher Jonathon Mulford.

Zito appeared in 46 games last season with 43 starts, producing 42 hits along with 20 RBI. In the outfield, he turned in a .961 field percentage with 73 putouts.

"Nick is one of our better offensive players and is also an excellent defender," said Coach Scala. "He is an 'Ironman' that goes out and plays almost every day. For that, being named captain was almost a certain award for him and he has responded well."

Signore made 25 starts in 31 games last season and represented the Riverhead and the North Team in the Hampton Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game this summer.

Scala added that, "the team has a high respect for how Donato goes about his work on and off the field. He is a quiet leader because of his work ethic and we expect him to have a bounce back season, similar to his sophomore year in 2013."

Van Allen pitched in nine games in 2014 with 7.1 innings of work resulting in seven strikeouts.

"Ricky is always going to be a leader, even when he graduates from Adelphi," said Scala. "He stepped in as a group coordinator at our camp this summer and exceeded expectations. His vocal leadership is important for our team and we can trust on only telling him once to have the team do something."

The lone junior captain, Mulford shared a team-high of 10 starts last season with 13 games pitched as he posted a 2.93 earned run average along with team-bests of 70.2 innings pitched and 59 strikeouts.

"Another quiet leader, Mulford demonstrates his leadership by example with the way he plays. He pitched in key games for us late last season that helped us make a run in the conference tournament," said Scala.

The Panthers finished 24-23 last season that included a run to the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Final.
