Byrne '09 Saves Pace!

Baseball Downs New Haven 3-2

 

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.- The Pace University baseball team, ranked #7 in the first NCAA East Region poll, defeated the Chargers of New Haven 3-2 in Northeast-10 Southwest Division action. The Setters improve to 24-16 overall, 14-8 in the NE-10 and remain atop the Southwest Division with a 12-2 record. The Chargers fall to 19-15-1, 10-11-1 and 6-7-1 in division play.

The Setters got all their runs in the fifth as they scored three runs on only one hit. Chris Roemer (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) reached on an error, while Kyle Turnier (Waterford, CT/Waterford) and Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) walked to load the bases. Joe Lombardi (Briarcliff, NY/Briarcliff) drew a walk for the first run of the game, while James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton) drove in two runs with a double for a 3-0 Setter lead. The Chargers got a pair of runs in the sixth but fell short of a comeback.

Jonathan Hornung (Calverton, NY/Riverhead) for the start for Pace as he tossed 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, while striking out four to even his record to 3-3 on the season. Eddie Byrne (Yonkers, NY/Stepinac HS) struck out one in 3 2/3 scoreless innings to earn his team-best four save of the season.

The Setters and the Chargers will play for a third and final time this season as the teams will head to West Haven, CT for a NE-10 Southwest Division game at 3:30 pm.
