D-backs claim reliever Sweeney

Right-hander has ties to GM Towers from San Diego days

PHOENIX -- Remaking the bullpen is the top offseason priority for D-backs' GM Kevin Towers and he began that process on Wednesday when the club claimed right-handed reliever Brian Sweeney off waivers.

Sweeney appeared in 24 games for the Mariners in 2010 and was 1-2 with a 3.16 ERA.

The 36-year-old has pitched in parts of four seasons in the Majors since beginning his professional career in the Heartland (Independent) League in 1996.

Sweeney pitched for the Mariners in 2003 and '10, and with the Padres in '04 and '06 when Towers was San Diego's GM. In 73 big league games, he is 4-2 with a pair of saves and a 3.38 ERA.

In fixing the Majors' worst bullpen, Towers has vowed to leave no stone unturned.

"When you're a small-market or middle-market club, you're going to have to be a little more creative," he said during his introductory press conference.

The day before being awarded the claim on Sweeney, Towers said the club was actively monitoring the waiver wire for pitching.

"You never know," he said.

The move leaves the D-backs with 39 players on their 40-man roster.
