Posted Monday, March 08, 2010 by Keith Richardson
The Iona College baseball team swept the first two games of a weekend trip to Coppin State, defeating the Eagles 9-6 and 13-2.

The Gaels opened up the scoring in the top of the second. Sophomore 1B Michael Chiaravalloti walked with one out and senior C Chris Griffin followed with a double. Sophomore OF Colin Lyall walked to load the bases and sophomore SS Eric Capowski did the same to chase Chiaravalloti home. The big blow of the inning came when freshman CF Anthony Muccio singled to right, scoring Lyall and Griffin. Muccio stole second and went to third as the throw went home to tag out Capowski trying to advance from third. Senior 2B Nick Rossetti struck out, but a pass ball allowed him to reach and Muccio to score.

The Gaels put another run across in the third when senior LF Andrew Passerelle opened with a walk. Passerelle stole second and moved to third on an error on the play. Passerelle scored when Chiaravalloti reached on an error by the Coppin State left fielder. Chiaravalloti was able to advance to third, but the Eagles were able to record the third out before any damage was done by Iona.

The Eagles answered with a run of their own in the third. Chris Kashangaki reached with a single and stole second and third. He was chased home by a RBI single off the bat of Alexander Garza.

Chiaravalloti continued his strong day when he hit a homer down the right field line in the fifth, putting Iona up 6-1.

Iona opened the game up in the eighth. Capowski reached on an error and Muccio walked. Freshman DH Kyle Charron singled to left, scoring Capowski. An error by the Coppin State left fielder allowed Muccio to score. A wild pitch by the Eagles pitcher allowed Charron to score as the Gaels scored three runs in the inning with only one hit.

A five run rally by Coppin State cut the Gaels lead to three, but sophomore reliever Jordan Gilruth was able to record the final two outs after being summoned from the Iona bullpen.

For Iona, senior LHP Justin Wiley pitched another gem, tossing seven innings of one run ball, scattering five hits and walking three.

In game two, senior LHP Brian Callahan pitched six innings, allowing one unearned run and three hits. This effort was strong enough that the Gaels wouldn't have needed to give much run support. However the Iona bats awoke for 13 runs and 13 hits.

The Gaels got on the board with three runs in the first. Rossetti reached on an error and stole second. With two outs, and Rossetti on third, Griffin walked and Chiaravalloti tripled to left to score two runs for the Gaels. Sophomore CF Dean Dignelli followed with a single to score Chiaravalloti and the Gaels were on their way to another strong offensive showing.

In the second, Charron singled with two outs, and Passerelle followed with a walk. Griffin singled to right to score Charron and move Passerelle to third. A Chiaravalloti single scored Passarelle, and Griffin scored when he and Chiaravalloti executed a double steal.

The Gaels scored three more runs in the fifth inning. A Griffin double scored two while another Chiaravalloti RBI made the score 9-0 in Iona's favor. Griffin added another RBI in the sixth when he drove Rossetti home with a sacrifice fly.

In the fifth, Coppin State cracked the scoring column when Avent reached on an error and was driven in by Black.

Iona scored another three runs in the sixth inning as the Gaels scored on RBI hits from sophomore James Beck, freshman Matthew Kriss and a bases loaded walk by Passerelle.

On the day, Iona had 19 hits, six for extra bases. The Gaels finish the three game series Sunday morning with first pitch coming at 11:00 am.
