Hempstead, NY --
Pride sophomore second baseman Chris Mentrasti (Hartsdale, NY - pictured -Stepinac HS) singled to score classmate centerfielder Nick Panzarella (Three Bridges, NJ) for the game-winning run in the ninth to lead the Pride to a 3-2 win over Northeastern, on Sunday afternoon at University Field. With the win, Hofstra caps-off the 2007 season at 20-35 (11-18 CAA), while Northeastern drops to 23-20 (11-15 CAA). The Pride clinch its second consecutive series against the Huskies, after taking two of three games in the 2006 season.

The Huskies opened up the scoring in the top of the second frame, taking a 2-0 lead. Designated hitter Frank Pesanello hit a one-out single to reach first base. Pesanello was batted in by a single from third baseman James Donaldson. A sacrifice fly from second baseman Garrett Chin scored centerfielder Frank Compagnone, putting the Huskies up 2-0.

Solid pitching from senior Patrick Rogers (Centereach, NY) kept the Huskies scoreless for the next six innings. Over eight innings of work, Rogers allowed two runs off seven hits and no walks, striking out six batters.

Mentrasti led off the sixth inning by smacking a triple deep into the right field corner. Senior left fielder Andy Campana (Piscataway, NJ) grounded out to Chin, which allowed Mentrasti to bring the Pride within one, 2-1. Junior designated hitter Anthony Sarno (Avenel, NJ) doubled to get into scoring position. Northeastern starter Trevor Smith walked first baseman Matt Kougasian (Rochelle Park, NJ) putting the potential leading run on base, but was cut short by a ground out from shortstop Tom Legregni.

In the ninth, Kougasian led off for the Pride with a single to Donaldson, and advanced to second after Legregni grounded out to Chin. After a pitching change brought in freshman reliever Ryan Quigley, Panzarella picked up a walk on a full-count, putting runners on first and second. Junior right fielder Dave Cole (Teaneck, NJ) sent the first pitch down the right field line to score Kougasian, tying the score at two. With two-outs, Mentrasti nailed the 1-2 pitch down the left field line to send home Panzarella, ending the game with the Pride up 3-2.

Senior reliever Jeff Denlea (Oyster Bay, NY) earned the win (4-2) for the Pride, coming in to pitch in the ninth and allowing no runs, one hit, no walks and struck out one batter. Quigley picked up the loss (1-2) for Northeastern pitching 1/3 of an inning and allowing one run off two hits, one walk and struck out one batter.
